LONG BRANCH: Long Branch Mayor Adam Schneider will have a challenger in this year’s election.

Avery Grant, a member of the Long Branch Board of Education, has filed to run for mayor in the May 13 election.

Every incumbent council member including Joy Bastelli, Kate Billings, Mary Jane Celli, John Pallone and Michael Sirianni are running for re-election on Schneider’s ticket. Also running for council this year are David Pizzo and Cynthia Branch.

Candidates had until 4 p.m. on Monday, March 10 to file their petitions to run for council in this year’s election.

A third mayoral candidate, Richard James, could be added to the mix. City Clerk Kathy Schmelz said James did not have enough valid signatures to run for mayor.

The nomination process required the candidates to obtain the signatures of 1 percent, or 142, of the registered voters that participated in the 2010 election.

James has until Thursday to correct the signatures but cannot add any new signatures if he wishes to run in May’s election.
