West Long Branch: Changes for 2012 as well as familiar traditions are planned for this year’s 10th Annual Michael Thorne Scholarship 4-Mile Run set for May 20. Folks come from many towns in the area, firefighters among them, as supporters to the event established to remember the 20-year-old West Long Branch firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty.
The support the event received from the community and athletes over the past 9 years has allowed over $100K in scholarships to go to local high school students who have shown the spirit of volunteerism in their community.
Chief Al Thorne (Michael's father) was the starter for the first year the race was held. This year in honor of the Tenth Annual running, Michaels mother, Mrs. Lynne Thorne, will be the starter.
The race staff has purchased a new flagpole for Michael Thorne Park, which has never had one before. On the evening of May 8th there will be a ceremony to hoist the American Flag and the Michael Thorne Flag onto the new pole!
At that same time there will be a park cleanup exercise. The team is excited about participating and giving back to the community and its young athletes!
For the first time, event staff is going to offer a bag check for the runners. Runners will not have to go back to their cars to drop off their stuff, however, items must be picked up by 11:00 am.
The staff will also be giving out bibs, t-shirt and special 10th Annual gifts to the first 500 4-mile registrants (not necessarily pre-registered).
Event leaders said they are always looking for new sponsors. Speak to them if interested.
