53rd annual Asbury Park Polar Bear Racewalk

ASBURY PARK: On the Saturday before New Year's Day racewalker John Soucheck of Little Silver and member of the Shore Athletic Club stepped to the start line for the 53rd Annual 10-Mile Racewalk on the boards at Asbury Park, Convention Hall. He went on to be the first across the Finish in a most respectable 1:36:52 time. Ocean Township's Fred Linkhart took 4the, another WOTS area competitor. Second went to Bruce Logan from NYC, and 5th went to Shore AC's Tom Quatrocchi, a former local guy who has been in the racing forefront for years at the Jersey shore.

To wrap up the men's group performance Barry Blake from Summit was third, and John Morrison, Essex, Ron Salvio, Avtar Tinna NYC, and Elliot Colins from Raritan also racewalked the distance to edge Panse Geer who turned in a 2:06:28 finish. Sue Lockhart, Hillsborough and Susan Palermo, West Orange crossed the line at 2:13:08 and 2:26:49 respectively.

Officials were Gene Geer, Larry Kalb, both former runners and racewalkers, and Elliott Denman who invented the event 53 years back.

Weather was excellent, no wind, about 40 degrees and overcast a bit. Concurrently a Health Walk was intermixed with athletes from each event together on the course, a real nice combo, and casual way to enjoy the Oceanside ambiance.
