Shore's Mark Constantino, #13 scoring one of 3 touchdowns in 45-7 trouncing of South River
West Long Branch: Friday nights and high school usually mean one thing. Football. Mid way into their 2012 campaign, the 3 -1 Blue Devils took the field against another 3 – 1 opponent, the South River Rams. On paper, this contest looked to be evenly matched; however it was clear that Shore Regional had a distinct offensive advantage for most of the game.
The first quarter started slow for both teams by going three and out. But, by the middle of the first quarter, Shore Regional broke things wide open with a punt return by number 13, Mark Constantino, for a 60 plus yard touchdown. The Blue Devils kept the pressure on the Rams for the rest of the quarter. But, they were only able to add a field goal to their 7-0 lead, making the score 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.
For most of the second quarter, the Blue Devils kept the ball on the ground moving the ball well against the Rams defense. By the middle of the second quarter, the game was blown wide open with a cutback run to the end zone by number 24, Kevin Masica. On the next possession, the Blue Devils continued to move the ball on the ground setting up a beautiful fade pass to the end zone for the second score of the quarter. But the Blue Devils’ weren’t done yet. After starting deep in their own territory, Shore Regional struck again with what looked to be an off-tackle run from scrimmage that turned into another long-yardage run for a touchdown. By the end of the first half, the Blue Devils were up 31 to 0, and were in complete control of this contest.
The third quarter was more of the same. Mark Constantino scored his third touchdown of the game putting the Blue Devils up 38 to 0. But the Rams didn’t give up without a fight. Number 11, Pietra Thomas got the Rams on the board with a 50 plus yard run in which he broke through multiple tacklers and sidestepped defenders. On the next possession, the Blue Devils took total control of the game and marched down the field, setting up a two-yard run by the Full Back, Jack Kelly.
Shore Regional won the turnover battle in the game forcing one fumble grabbing two interceptions. These short-field opportunities led to scoring opportunities and helped Shore Regional put points on the board throughout the contest.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter and with less than 10 minutes left, the Blue Devils had relinquished their starting roles to both back up and eligible JV players.
With this win, Shore Regional is now 4-1 while the Rams fall to 3-2. The next game is 10/5/12 at 7:00pm, where the Blue Devils will travel to play Holmdel on the road.
