Borough, Fire House To Enter Lease Agreement Due To Recreation Activities

LITTLE SILVER: The borough plans to execute a lease agreement with the Little Silver Volunteer Fire Company, in order to continue using the adjacent fields for recreation programs and add bathrooms.

The recreation department uses the nearby fields and this year the department hopes to install a bathroom, but the borough never had a lease agreement with the fire company to improve on the property. In order to continue, the borough and the fire company have to agree to a lease agreement, which will come before the borough council for vote on February 23.

Borough Administrator Kimberly Jungfer and Attorney Meghan Bennett Clark said the council needs to have a lease agreement in place with the fire department, as the land is actually owned by them, not the borough.

Jungfer said the recreation department is budgeting to build a public bathroom on the site, possibly attached to the building and accessible during hours when activities are scheduled on the fields.

The parking lot of the fire house is often used for those attending the recreation programs, and for borough purposes, Jungfer said. The parking lot may also be repaved.

"We don't have a lease," Clark said. "We'd need to have that in place. It's in everyone's best interest. You can't improve upon the property without a lease agreement."

The borough council members said they've been working with the fire officials to see what is possible and to suggest plans for the bathrooms. For example, a door from the outside to the bathroom would be best, so it could be more accessible. Attaching the bathroom to the building instead of creating a new structure would be best in order to hook up to the existing building's current plumbing.

The ordinance moving forward with a lease is on the February 23 meeting.
