Cell Tower Still In The Works For Sea Bright

SEA BRIGHT: It may be taking longer than expected, but Verizon's plan to erect a cell tower in the borough is finally taking shape.

Sea Bright Councilman Charles Rooney said during the Dec. 13 Sea Bright Council meeting that Verizon just received the CAFRA permit needed to build the cell tower in the parking lot behind Sea Bright Borough Hall.

"That's pretty much the biggest hurdle," Rooney said. "There's still a couple of other things that need to get done but I spoke with (Assemblyman) Declan O'Scanlon (R-13) the other day and he hopes by the end of the spring before the summer we should have our cell tower."

Verizon was awarded a $34,012 contract in 2014 to construct a 105-foot and ancillary wireless telephone support equipment and structures. The tower will be a "flagless flag pole" design that the council felt would be more aesthetically pleasing than a traditional cell tower. Earlier this year, Verizon installed a temporary cell tower in the borough hall parking lot. The temporary tower will be moved to make way for the larger one.

Rooney added that Verizon will not be the only carrier with equipment on the tower as AT&T and T-Mobile are also looking to expand their coverage in Sea Bright.

"If we do get all of them, we should in the $85,000 a year range," Rooney said.

Borough officials have said the revenue generated by the cell tower will be used to offset the cost of the construction of two new municipal buildings.
