City To Begin Clean Up of Garbage Areas Soon

LONG BRANCH: The garbage containment areas around the city will begin to be removed in the next few weeks.

Long Branch Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Fred Migliaccio has said he thinks the city-owned dumpsters behind stores on Broadway and West End should be removed because they have become difficult to manage and are now a problem.

Notices were delivered to business owners who have these containment areas behind their stores in May

"These containment areas had been provided as a courtesy to businesses in the area," a notice from the city states. "Unfortunately, unauthorized dumping has made the situation untenable as well as the deplorable conditions on several occasions they had been found in."

The notice states that use of the containment areas will stop on Sept. 30 and the removal process will begin on Oct. 1.

Businesses that once used the containment areas will now have to handle the disposal of their own waste

"Businesses that had access to the containment areas behind Freddie's and the Homestead will be able to place their collectibles behind their stores along the access road for the parking lot," the notice states. "Businesses that had access to the containment area off Montgomery, you will be able to place their collectibles behind their stores along the access road for the parking lot. All others would need to place at the curb."

The only containment area that will remain is the one behind Brookdale Community College in the Lower Broadway area, because it is in much better shape than the others.

The containment areas were installed about 12 years ago to unify the garbage areas of several city businesses.
