Close to 500 Runners Participate in Michael Thorne Scholarship Race

West Long Branch: A good crowd of 489 runners stepped to the start line at Franklin Lake for the 12th annual Michel W. Thorne Scholarship Race on Sunday, May 18.

This year’s Official Starter was 12 year- supporter Buddy Damiano joined by a WLB Scouts Honor Guard and with Pat Joyce singing the Star Spangled Banner. Michael’s parents, Lynn and Al Thorne held the Banner at the Finish Line.

The abundance of pink shirts provided to registered runners was in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Robert Cavanaugh led the field all the way, finishing with a 20 minute 38 second time, besting his last year achievement, while Rumson’s Katie Connor led the women runners for First Female with a fast 26:22 time and a 6.36 pace.

The event is in memory of 20-year-old firefighter Michael Thorne who lost his life in the line of duty 30 years ago. In keeping with a tradition, a special award was presented this year to the Tinton Falls Fire Department for having the most participants from a fire department.

The event was coordinated by Phil and Penny Hinck of the Jersey Shore Runners Club. Elite Racing Systems provided the scoring.

The sunny morning and cool temps made for great running conditions for the 4M, the Kids Races and the One Mile and Half Mile events for ages 14 and below.

Awards went to the top three male and female athletes by age group who posed for a group photo opportunity after the awards ceremony.

A post-race celebration was held at the Oceanport Avenue Fire House, another tradition that featured eats, beverages and music.
