OCEAN TOWNSHIP: The county will be testing the water of Deal Lake for the first time in many years.
The Friends of Deal Lake, a collaboration of neighbors whose goals are to rejuvenate and preserve the lake, announced on its Facebook page that the Monmouth County Freehold John Curley has helped set up the testing which will help determine if the water poses any public health hazards.
Deal Lake is the largest lake in Monmouth County and is bordered by seven municipalities including Ocean Township, Asbury Park, Allenhurst, Deal, Interlaken, Loch Arbour and Neptune Township.
The testing will provide a baseline for further testing and can be used to support funding requests and proposals.
The Friends of Deal Lake state that the testing is important for several reasons including the fact that the untreated waters of the lake are discharged directly to the ocean and local beaches.
The group's post also states that people catch and eat fish and shellfish from the lake and that many people use the lake to water lawns and gardens. People also canoe, kayak and paddle board on the lake.
The exact date of the testing has not been announced, but the Friends of Deal Lake say they will keep the public informed on the process as it moves along.
