Deal Ordinance Would Limit Beach Parking On Several Streets

DEAL: A proposed ordinance would limit parking on several borough streets which offer beach access.

The ordinance would requirer residential permit parking only on one side of Monmouth Terrace, Monmouth Drive, Hathaway Avenue, Sydney Avenue, Neptune Avenue, Deal Esplanade, Darlington Road, Ocean Lane and Roosevelt Avenue. The parking restrictions would be enforced from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and holidays.

The ordinance is slated to be introduced by the Deal Council at its Jun 29 meeting at 5 p.m.

A similar ordinance, which would have added residential permit parking restrictions to six streets, was tabled by the council last year after concerns were raised by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) due to the fact that it could have limited beach access to newly replenished beaches.

Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club, said in a release that his group opposes the ordinance.

"They say this ordinance will not limit beach access, but it will be eliminating and severely restricting parking, which will therefore limit access," Tittel said. "We have the right to get to our coast and parking shouldn't only be available for Deal residents."
