Decision On Future of Sea Bright Post Office Not Yet Finalized

SEA BRIGHT: The future of the Sea Bright Post Office at 1030 Ocean Ave. has not yet been decided.

The Sea Bright postal branch was suspended because that building was severely damaged by superstorm sandy.

"Those operations were temporarily placed in Rumson which is the main Post Office overseeing that branch," United State Postal Service Spokesman Ray Daiutolo said. "A short time later, a Village Post Office (VPO) was opened in Bain's Hardware Store in Sea Bright. The Sea Bright PO Boxes were relocated to that VPO and it continues to operate today."

The VPO is the first of its kind in the state.

Daiutolo said a feasibility study regarding the discontinuation of operation at the Sea Bright Branch was launched in 2013 and that it is still pending.

"A final determination has not been made," he said. "That decision is made at postal HQ in Washington.

He said that regardless of the final decision the VPO at Bain's Hardware will continue to operate.

As for the building that once housed the Sea Bright Post Office, there have been plans discussed that would convert the building into a 3-story boutique hotel.

However, no formal plan has been submitted to the Sea Bright Planning Board.
