Developer Hopes To Turn Long Branch Building Into City's First Distillery

LONG BRANCH: A Westwood Avenue building could become the city's first distillery.

The building is located at 199 Westwood Avenue and is basically just warehouse space now, but the current owner has presented a plan to turn in into a distillery which would make vodka, whiskey and other spirits. The building would also have a craft brewery, event space and a retail area where wine can be sold. The building is located on the east side of the intersection of Westwood Avenue and West Avenue.

The plans were recently presented to the Long Branch Planning Board during an informal hearing according to board member Kathleen Billings.

Billings said the originally wanted to open the space as a winery but was told by the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) that a winery cannot be located in the proposed area. Instead, the owners will partner with a winery in Hammonton and sell their wine. They are also looking to partner with local restaurants to bring their food to the establishment.

The final site plan could be presented to board in the next couple of months while the owners work with he ABC to finalize their plans for the building.
