Eatontown Apartment Fire Victim Dies

EATONTOWN: The 69-year-old victim of an apartment fire which occurred in Eatontown last week died as a result of her injuries this past Monday afternoon, announced Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

The joint investigation by the Eatontown Police Department, Eatontown Fire Bureau, Monmouth County Fire Marshal's Office and the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office - Major Crimes Bureau and Crime Scene Unit determined the fire to be accidental and the origin to be an electrical baseboard heater in the bedroom of the apartment.

At approximately 12:37 a.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015, the Eatontown Police Department and the borough fire department responded to a structure fire at the Garrison Apartment Complex located at 3 Throckmorton Avenue. Upon arrival, heavy fire and smoke activity was observed blowing out of the window of Apartment 302.

The victim, Brenda Taylor, a resident of Apartment 302, was unresponsive when she was located by firefighters and removed from the scene. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with serious burn injuries and later transferred to the Burn Center at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston where she died.

Nine people in total were injured as a result of the fire, including the 69-year-old victim. Seven people, including two Eatontown firefighters, were treated for smoke inhalation and later released from Monmouth Medical Center. Another woman, a 78-year-old resident of the apartment complex was transported to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank for treatment after complaining of chest pains. She remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Responding fire agencies included the fire departments from Eatontown, West Long Branch, Oceanport, Shrewsbury, Neptune Township and Tinton Falls.
