West Long Branch: Former NJ Governor Christine Todd Whitman was welcomed to Monmouth University’s Wilson Hall where she was greeted by Student Government Association President Kelly Craig.
She came to talk with students about the political scene, share her experience as NJ Governor and national EPA Administrator, and to begin her role as the University’s Public Servant in Residence.
Whitman is author of the best seller, Its My Party Too, and is President of the Whitman Strategy Group, which specializes in energy and environmental issues.
She talked about growing up in a very politically interested family and of challenges for a woman in public life. She said women interested in getting into politics might find getting started uncomfortable which could lead them to back away. However, she told the audience that success comes from commitment, self-confidence and hard work. She spoke about the bias she faced and encouraged them to be strong and confident in their ability to learn and grow.
Whitman also spoke about how her favorite political figure, President Lincoln, had the ability to work with opposing views and to affect consensus through compromise and forming building agreements among people.
The Public Servant in Residence forum allows public officials to share their expertise with students and the campus community. Contact Dr. Joseph Patten, firstname.lastname@example.org or (732) 263-5742 for information.
