Fort Monmouth To Open To Traffic Next Week

EATONTOWN: Fort Monmouth will be open to vehicular traffic next week.

The county has announced that the Avenue of Memories, which traverses the Phase 2 property of Fort Monmouth from Route 35 in Eatontown to Oceanport Avenue in Oceanport, will open on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The road will be open following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and the flashing yellow light on Oceanport Avenue will also be reactivated at that time.

The road has been closed since the Base Closure and Realignment (BRAC) Commission shuttered Fort Monmouth in 2011.

The county has been working for the last few months to prepare the road for vehicular use by installing temporary fencing, adding new signage and repairing traffic signals. The county also made drainage system repairs and improvements, realigned, reconfigured and repaved sections of the road. Along the Eatontown section of County Route 537, referred to as Avenue of Memories, existing monuments and the "Johnson Gate" arches at the State Highway 35 entrance have been repaired and cleaned.

The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) will work with the county to make sure the former fort buildings along the avenue are patrolled and protected by video surveillance.

In October, the FMERA Board authorized staff to enter into an agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to initiate a deer culling program in an attempt to make the road safer for drivers.
