Sea Bright: It was the 2013 Ancient Order of Hibernians Polar Plunge for Catholic Education. After Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Jersey Shore in October of last year, Surf Rider Beach Club could not host the annual event this year.
The Sea Bright Volunteer Fire Department stepped in and hosted the event at the Sea Bright Public Beach on Sunday. Under the shadow of rebuilding efforts in Sea Bright hundreds of brave souls took to the Atlantic Ocean for a dip. Some went back more than once... YIKES! The Army Corp of Engineers constructed a ramp that allowed plungers to cross over an exposed pipe.
Spectators lined the caution tape that outlined the route to the ocean. The plunging crowd was lead to the beach by a color guard with bag pipes and drummers. Catholic Schools from all over the area participated: Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, Red Bank Catholic, St. James, Mater Dei Prep and All Saints Catholic School to name just a few. Pledges raised as of Saturday night totaled more than $111,706.43.
The mantra for the day was Renew, Restore, Rebuild! The event was one of many to return to Sea Bright. Look for the Keith McHeffey Run that will take place on March 9, 2013, all profits will go the Sea Bright Recreation Department.
