Future Looks Brighter For Elberon Fire Company Thanks To Grant

LONG BRANCH: Elberon Engine Company will be upgrading some of its equipment thanks to a grant from New Jersey American Water (NJAW).

The Long Branch fire company was one of four in Monmouth County to get the grant from NJAW and will use the $947 check it received today to purchase six LED flashlights.

Elberon Engine Company Captain Jonathan Ryan said one LED flashlight will be given to each member of the fire company to replace their older, heavier halogen flashlights.

"These have a brighter light and they last longer," Ryan said. "We've been in need of new flashlights for some time."

Ryan said the lights are useful inside burning building because firefighters often use them to mark where a staircase is or the edge of a roof.

NJAW Coastal Regional Senior Director of Operations Kevin Kirwan said the grant was created to help fire departments purchase "needed fire safety equipment."

"We already supply one part of the equation with fire hydrants, but (the firefighters) do all the hard work," Kirwan said.

Other local fire departments that received the grant include Oceanport, Neptune and Shrewsbury.
