Future of Long Branch's West End Firehouse Undecided

LONG BRANCH: The future of one of the city's firehouses is currently up in the air.

Long Branch Business Administrator Howard Woolley said the West End Firehouse, located on the corner of Second Avenue and Montgomery Avenue, has been closed for the last 6-7 months after problems were discovered in the building.

"There's a problem with the roof and asbestos," Woolley said. "It's an old building that needs a lot of work."

He said the vehicles that were once housed there are currently stationed at fire headquarters on Union Avenue.

The city does not own the building, but has been leasing it for years, Woolley said.

No decision on whether the building will be renovated or not has been made as of last week.

Long Branch Fire Department officials have been discussing the possibility of consolidating some of its nine fire companies to find a more efficient way to organize its members and vehicles.

The fire department is working on a financial plan for its future that will be submitted to the Long Branch Council. That plan will include financial considerations associated with consolidation.
