Governor Christie Issues State of Emergency

North Middletown:  Governor Chris Christie declared a State of Emergency in advance of Hurricane Sandy today as he called a press conference this morning from North Middletown.   Mandatory evacuations are to begin Sunday at 4pm for all barrier islands from Sandy Hook to Cape May.   County shelters will be open and available to anyone who must evacuate and cannot shelter with friends or relatives.

The state is coordinating with electric utility companies in anticipation of expected power outages.   Utility companies have requested assistance from power companies from as far away as Washington State.

The Governor is asking residents to stay off the roads starting Sunday evening.

All State Parks will close Sunday at noon.
