LONG BRANCH: Saturday at the NJ Marathon weekend in the city was Kids Day and the 5K Run. The schedule was modified this year to better use the overall timing of the events, a delay saver.
The fun remained, focused on the youngsters early in the day as they raced to the finish line at the Madison Avenue on the Great Lawn.
Waiting for the young runners was Monmouth Medical Center's Dr. Meg Fisher, with her great smiles and friendly hands reaching out to welcome finishers. It has been Dr. Meg's joy over many years to put the children first in her priorities.
The 5K for male runners was won by Jared Cooper of Mountain Lakes, with a three-minute lead at the finish over Alexandro Sanchez of Freehold.
The 5K Females win went to Alyssa Heffelfinger from Oceanport, bib #10443 in the photo. Sandra Zarraga from Holmdel was second.
Long Branch city staff and council members were on the sidelines rooting faithfully and police and fire from the towns around joined in keeping things safe and traffic moving. Businesses also supported as per Aaron Levine, President of the LB Chamber of Commerce running the grill for his Dads WIndMill tent burger and hot dog stand. Fun inflated rides were busy also, and a few families were on the beach soaking up the sunshine.
