LONG BRANCH: The Long Branch Rotary and students from Long Branch Schools have partnered once again this year to gather community support to helping the less fortunate at the holiday season.
The very successful project has included food collections at local food stores as the Shop Rite in West Long Branch on Route 36 and Monmouth Road.
The teams ask shoppers for donations of food or money contributions which gets translated to food when Rotarians spend the dollars to purchase more food when donors find it more convenient to contribute in that way.
About 20 van loads of food, plus food purchased with donations have been collected in the Thanksgiving and the Christmas and Hanukah holiday collection this year, more than last year as the community senses the continuing struggles the economy and employment situations have added to the need.
The photos with the article are students and Rotary volunteers and Shop Rite's manager demonstrating the store's role in helping the mission to help others. Shoppers are encouraged to purchase and donate food items as they do their own food shopping. The approach has been well received and served many families.
