Long Branch Community Holds Candlelight Vigil For Homicide Victims

LONG BRANCH: Neighbors gathered on Lippincott Avenue on Sunday evening to hold a candlelight vigil for Joan Colbert, 62, and her 10 year old foster child, Veronica Roach, victims of a homicide in their home on Friday.

Daylight was fading as candle bearers placed their tapers along the walk and on the front steps where Colbert and Roach had lived.

The assembly of close to 200 was led in prayer by Elder Caroline Bennett, Pastor of McLaughlin Pentecostal Faith Church two blocks away on Liberty Street where Joan worshipped.

In the close neighborhood all knew Joan and spoke of her as a gentle, caring woman whose goodness and love for others was on the lips of all. Shock and sadness of her loss cast a quiet, somber pall as they prayed together.

The homicide remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutors office and Long Branch Police. The numbers to call are 732-577- 8799 for the county and 732-222-1000 for the Long Branch Police. A reward for information has been posted on police electronic signage on Liberty Street near Central Avenue.
