Long Branch Considering Smoking Ban on Beaches

LONG BRANCH: On the heels of lawmakers working on new legislation that would make most state parks and beaches smoke-free, city officials are looking to do the same.

The bill, crafted by Senator Shirley Turner, passed out of committee on Monday and now goes to the full Senate for a vote.

A last-minute compromise cleared the way for towns and counties to create smoking sections in certain areas if they choose to. State parks and beaches would have a total ban.

In Long Branch, smoking is only prohibited in designated areas on city beaches.

However, the Long Branch Council will reportedly discuss banning smoking on all city beaches at its next meeting.

There is currently no smoking or tobacco products allowed on Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In Sea Bright, smoking is allowed on beaches, but littering is prohibited.
