Long Branch Looks To Ban E Cigarettes At Beaches, Parks

LONG BRANCH: The city is looking to ban e cigarettes at beaches, parks, boardwalk and promenade.

Long Branch Business Administrator Kevin Hayes said the city has been receiving complaints about people smoking the e cigarettes in these areas and would like to ban them in the same way as regular cigarettes. Hayes said there have also been complaints during the concerts at West End Park.

An amendment would need to be made to the city's park and beach ordinances for the ban to go into effect; something that could be done as soon as next month.

Smoking regular cigarettes is currently not prohibited on the boardwalk, promenade or parks, but the amended ordinance would change that as well.

"Right now they can (smoke in those areas), but we're also starting to get complaints there because people are congregating and smoking and there's also not disposing of it properly," Long Branch Emergency Management Coordinator Stanley Dziuba said.

Smoking tobacco products on city beaches has been banned since 2011.

People who wanted to smoke would have to go to the west side of Ocean Avenue once the ordinance goes into effect.
