Long Branch Students Welcome Black History Month

LONG BRANCH: At Gregory School, students and their teachers, adjusted a last minute change in program plans to stay on course to celebrate Black History Month at the school.

In a great show of cultural respect students began the day program with Lift Every Voice, with the lyrics setting the stage for the event. In the lyrics are the words the included the passage "Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won."

The youngsters used those sentiments in their skits, poems and other positive tributes to the history and to the heroes who have brought the generations forward.

They recited poetry of Langston Hughes, spoke of and presented famous people and inventors, and reenacted tribute to the courage and strength of the Tuskegee Airmen. They sang "Stormy Weather "with smiles of success.

It was a happy celebration that all the students and teachers enjoyed thoroughly.
