Long Branch:Last weekend the Long Branch Rotary, with a big assist from the city's Department of Public Works, planted 20 trees, Crimson King Maples, at three parks along Atlantic Avenue. The project was one of the Rotary's community support efforts, a part of the Club's "Service Before Self" motto. The Rotary Club's works towards scholarships for high school students, fundraisers for local, national and international charity programs.
The Long Branch DPW assisted with the ground preparation most notably using a large auger to dig the holes. It made the job a piece of cake and allowed for better tree placement and alignment in Branchport Park, the park at the ball fields near the river, and the park grounds at the Martin Luther King memorial park.
Rotarians Ken Gittell, Mike Hayes, Gordon Heggie and Joe La Braccie worked with DPW's Lou Delauro, Jim Parnell and Derrick Turner in a great community team effort. A job well done.
The Rotary meets at Rooney's at 12:15pm each Friday for anyone interested in learning more about the community minded group and becoming a member.
