LONG BRANCH:The first phase of the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the old Gregory School into affordable senior housing has been completed.
The project was undertaken by the Long Branch Housing Authority (LBHA), Conifer Realty LLC, the Metro Company and Maestro Development Corporation in 2011 and major construction on the site, located at 157 North 7th Ave., began in 2012.
The grand opening of the first phase of the project, known as the Gregory Senior Residences and Maestro Annex, was held on March 10 and it marked the opening of the first 65 units of the development plan.
The ground breaking for the final 52 units in phase two was also held on March 10.
The residences, which include five special needs units, will be managed by a partnership of the LBHA and Conifer Management Company.
Phase 2 of the project received a commitment of funding from the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery pool of Hurricane Sandy relief monies allocated by the federal government to the state following the storm. It will be one of the first of the 9 percent Low Income Housing Tax Credit developments to break ground with Sandy relief funds.
