Ocean School Board Welcomes New Superintendent To First Meeting

OCEAN TWP: A new superintendent was welcomed to his first school board meeting at the helm of Ocean Township Schools, to applause and friendly smiles.

James Stefankiewicz, who took the helm at the beginning of the school year, July 1, was cheerfully welcomed by board members at the workshop meeting July 29.

As the regular meeting began, the audience applauded Stefankiewicz, who went into details on the past year’s harassment, intimidation and bullying report, an annual document outlining the types of incidents that transpired.

“What a great way to kick off my first meeting,” said Stefankiewicz, to laughter and applause.

The report was actually one that showed the district’s success, as eight HIB incidents had transpired over the year, he said. “That’s in the entire district,” said the superintendent.

Stefankiewicz comes to the district from Red Bank Regional High School in Little Silver. He replaced John Lysko, superintendent at Ocean for four years who retired after 42 years in the district. Stefankiewicz is a longtime resident of Ocean Township.

To welcome the superintendent to the district, Stefankiewicz had hosted a meet and greet in May. He also plans to hold regular Evenings with the Superintendent events where the public and parents can discuss their ideas or concerns.

Stefankiewicz has already sent a letter to school parents and posted his welcome message to the schools website earlier this month.

The letter posted on his first day as superintendent, July 1:

“It is with great enthusiasm that I begin my time as the Superintendent of the Township of Ocean Public Schools. It is a tremendous honor to follow Mr. John Lysko in this position, a man who has masterfully and humbly served this community and our children for over 40 years.

In the coming weeks I will be working with our talented administrative team to prepare the schools for the opening in September.  Once school begins,  I will be conducting town-hall style meetings in each school in order to meet you and hear what is on your mind.  Until then, please feel free to contact me if I can be of service to you.
