Rumson: During their regular meeting, executives and coaches from the Peninsula Soccer Club wrapped up their Spring 2012 season at Molly Maguire’s in Rumson on Wednesday night. The meeting was part business and part fun. Most importantly, the organization awarded 4 local girls scholarships for their first year in college. Each of the award winners will receive a $5,000 scholarship to be used during their freshman year. PSC awarded $20,000 tonight.
The basic requirements for the scholarship were that the player played a minimum of 5 years in the organization, 2 of those five while in high school, they submitted a resume, along with recommendations from a coach or administrator in PSC as well as a teacher.
The 4 winners have played together under Coach Tom Gallo since 3rd grade and have put in lots of hours and hard work and have shown a dedication to the sport of soccer. The winners were: Alicia Gallo, a recent graduate of Red Bank Catholic HS and resident of Shrewsbury, twin sisters Dakota and Morgan Chayes, also recent graduates of RBC and residents of Oceanport. Missing from the group tonight was Rebecca Helstern, graduate of Red Bank Regional and resident of Little Silver; she was attending an orientation at Clemson University where she will attend in September.
Alicia Gallo will attend University of Mary Washington in Virginia; Dakota Chayes will attend Elon University while her sister Morgan will join Rebecca Helstern at Clemson University.
PSC covers the local communities of Little Silver, Shrewsbury, Oceanport, West Long Branch, Fair Haven, Rumson, Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach. Players come from as far away as Old Bridge, East Brunswick, Colts Neck, Toms River and Bayville to participate. The scholarships that the PSC award is a way of “Taking Care of Their Own”, and giving back to the community.
