Plunge for a Cause

Asbury Park:   The 11th  Annual Sons of Ireland Polar Bear Plunge was a fun success on Sunday as 500 plungers – “a wee bit more or less” – strode or dove into the Atlantic Ocean.

They raised more than $40,000 “to assist well deserving charitable organizations in Monmouth County”, the goal of the non-profit association dedicated to the principles of brotherhood, charity and community service.

“The ocean was cold, but not that cold,” said a smiling lass visiting from North Jersey. She was bundled in a warm mackinaw and sipping hot chocolate after her plunge. She was enjoying the sounds of Bran Kirk and the Jerks band inside the hall as hundreds danced in place to the music.

On the beach, packing his things to leave for home, Connor McNiff was keeping warm in a towel he brought “just for this plunge.”

The Sons of Ireland group was founded in 2002 to lend its support to worthy causes. In the years it has raised nearly $400,000 to help with local needs.
