West Long Branch: Last week was the "Read Across America" celebration at Betty McElmon Elementary, in West Long Branch. The Pre-K through 3rd Grade students followed a different theme each day and many dressed to match that theme.
Monday was “Wear red, white and blue.” For Tuesday, ”Hats Off to Reading” and the children wore a silly hat that day. Wednesday was “Wear your favorite sports team jersey day,” and on Thursday children were encouraged to “Snuggle up with a Good Book” and wore PJ’s.
On Friday the Monmouth University Shadow visited the school and children were encouraged to come dressed as their favorite reading character.
During the week athletes from Monmouth U’s basketball and baseball teams also visited. The Hawks read to the classes, answering lots of questions and telling the children how important reading is for them and how many things they can learn and enjoy. The athletes had a fun time visiting, and some said they are studying at college to become teachers. To go to college you must be a good reader, they said.
Nearly all 244 BME students were able to participate. Teachers, counselors and office staff joined in the week’s activities.
BME Principal, Mr. Earnhardt said “We always welcome the opportunity to work in conjunction with Monmouth University, furthering our partnership to the West Long Branch community” He is also an avid sports fan and loves reading.
