Little Silver: In a tribute to a young man taken too soon, Red Bank Regional retired the #34 basketball jersey at their home opener against Red Bank Catholic Monday night. Albert Martin, a 17 year old senior at RBR HS passed away during a basketball scrimmage just two weeks ago tonight. He will forever be remembered as #34.
The field house at RBR HS was flooded with a maroon t-shirt designed in Albert’s memory. Students and the local community wore the shirt to honor a well-liked young man, who could light up a room with his smile. The senior forward loved basketball and looked forward to playing the game in college next fall.
On hand was NJ Sate Senator, Jennifer Beck who presented a proclamation from the state of NJ to the Martin Dixon family. RBR Athletic Director Louis DelPra spoke about a young man who worked hard and played hard. RBR Varsity Coach Scott Martin talked about a leader and Principal Risa Clay presented Albert’s mother with a varsity letter jacket and a book of memories that the students put together to remember their schoolmate and friend.
A foundation has been set up in Albert’s memory. RBR established the Albert Martin Memorial Fund to defray funeral expenses and to honor Albert’s memory at the school.
