Councilman Brian Kelly, William Keeler and Marc Leckstein voted to appoint Lamia as they were the only members of the council present at the July 10 special meeting.
Lamia was chosen over candidates James G. Forsman and Leigh A. Maris. Forsman and Maris were the other two nominees chosen by the Republican municipal committee to fill Murphy's vacant spot on the council.
Lamia was the top vote-getter in the June primary for what will be two open spots on the Sea Bright Council in November. Murphy and Councilman James LoBiondo were the other two Republican candidates running for the spots on the dais. Now the race will simply be between LoBiondo, Lamia and the Democratic candidate Cori Socher.
Lamia will fill in for the remainder of Murphy's regardless of whether or not he is victorious in November's election. Murphy's term was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2014.
Mayor Dina Long said Lamia will likely be sworn in at the next Sea Bright Council meeting on Aug. 5.
