SEA BRIGHT: Borough Councilman C. Read Murphy has resigned from his spot on the dais.
"I would like to inform the residents that as of today I will no longer represent you on the Sea Bright Council," Murphy said on the All About Sea Bright Facebook page. :I have had a long and great run and I feel the need to leave with my head held high. I wish to thank all of you that have supported me over the past 28 + years. For those that have not.........Oh well."
As stated, Murphy has been on the council for over 28 years and also serves as the borough's Office of Emergency Management Director.
The unofficial results from the Monmouth County Clerk of Elections: newcomer John M. Lamia Jr. received 66 votes while GOP incumbents Murphy and James LoBiondo II each received 46 votes.
The process for breaking a tie falls to the Republican County Chairperson to certify which candidate will appear on the November ballot for the municipal election. However, last month the elections for the county party chairpersons were held. Shaun Golden is the new GOP county chair, and Vin Gopal was reelected as the Democrat county chair.
Golden had until Sept. 11 to sign off on who will be the second candidate, according to the county clerk of elections. The clerk’s office will be sending the paperwork to Golden next week.
The tie between Murphy and Lobiondo created a vacancy on the ballot, which causes the county chairperson to be notified. The party could fill the vacancy with either one of the candidates, Murphy or Lobiondo, or choose a new candidate for the election.
