Sea Bright Residents Vent About Sea Wall Fence: CLICK HERE

SEA BRIGHT: The newly-installed chain link fence on a section of the borough's sea wall has drawn the ire of some members of the public.

"I think it looks terrible," resident Susie Markson said during the July 1 Sea Bright Council meeting.

The fence replaces one that existed several years ago and is located between Donovan's Reef and the old Mad Hatter building.

Councilman C. Read Murphy said the fence was replaced to keep people from climbing over the sea wall to sneak onto the beach and also to protect the dunes located on the other side of the wall.

Borough Administrator Joseph Verruni said the borough applied for and was granted insurance proceeds to pay for the fence. Verruni said other types of fences, other than galvanized steel were considered, but were deemed to expensive.

Resident Courtney Davis, who is also the head of the borough's Sustainable Jersey Committee, said she did not feel the fence was necessary and was not aesthetically pleasing.

"I see these types of fences used in abandoned lots," Davis said. "It's an eyesore and an embarrassment."

Davis said the decision on whether or not to put up the fence should have been discussed at a public meeting.

Councilman Marc Leckstein said he was not sure why it was not discussed by the council before it was installed.

Sea Bright Police Chief John Sorrentino said a purchase order was made and that Taylor Fencing put up the fencing. Sorrentino said he is in favor of the fence for safety reasons and because it helps protect the dunes.

Councilman Brian Kelly, who was sitting in for Mayor Dina Long, said the fence will be discussed by a council committee to discuss its future.
