Sea Bright to Consider Bringing Farmers Market to Borough

SEA BRIGHT: A farmers market could be coming to the borough before the end of the summer.

Pamela Caputo, an Eatontown resident who helped start a farmers market in her own town, said at the July 1 council meeting that she could help start one in Sea Bright with the help of the borough.

Caputo said a suitable location would need to be identified and insurance would also be needed. She said some trash cans from the department of public works and possibly a few police officers to direct traffic would also be needed.

She said adding a farmers market to the borough would be beneficial in many ways.

"It offers community-building, foot traffic for local businesses and local food and artisans," she said.

Caputo said she and her team of volunteers would manage the market including getting local merchants to participate.

"We could get it all up and running in the next two weeks if the council gives us the go-ahead," she said.

Resident Courtney Davis, a member of the Sea Bright Sustainable Jersey Committee, said she supports the idea of a farmers market for the borough.

"Sustainable Sea Bright would be very interested in this," Davis said.

Davis said the farmers market, if approved, could be held on Thursdays during the busy summer months and either Saturday or Sunday in the fall.

Councilman Brian Kelly said the borough will likely discuss the possibility of adding the farmers market at a future council workshop meeting.
