Long Branch: The Shore Regional girls Field Hockey Team began their quest for a state championship this past Tuesday as they took on the 8th seed New Egypt Warriors. Coming off the NJSIAA Conference Tournament where Shore did not give up a goal, the Blue Devil’s hoped to continue their winning momentum.
From the onset of the match, Shore played an up-tempo fast paced game. Clearly, the strategy was to move the ball deep within the offensive zone forcing New Egypt to give up corners or other errors. This strategy worked very well. Shore had 10 unanswered corners and was able to begin the offensive assault in which Carol Middough scored early and often. Carol scored a natural hat-trick and than added one more for good measure. Up 4-0 at the half, Shore had this game won with thirty minutes left to play.
Although down by 4, New Egypt continued to play for both pride and self respect. For several minutes the Warriors showed that they could play with Shore. Instead of short passes, the Warriors moved the ball up the sides and crossed the ball in front of Shore’s net causing a scrum that ended up with several corners and eventually a mush goal that sparked their offense for the rest of the game.
