Shrewsbury: The Shrewsbury Foundation For Education held the 18th annual One Mile Any Style and 5K races in the neighborhood around the Shrewsbury Borough School. Racers of all ages and endurance levels arrived from Shrewsbury and beyond and began to assemble in front of the school as early as 7:45am. The crowd quickly grew to several hundred people as they registered for one of two races.
The Shrewsbury Foundation For Education organizes this race each year with the goal or raising money, which will directly impact the educational community and promote overall student success. This year’s race raised approximately twenty thousand dollars, all of which will be used to fund the purchase of 60 plus iPad 3 tablet devices and the applications needed to enhance student learning.
Although the race raises money from registrants, the majority of money comes from tiered sponsors who all have direct ties back to the Shrewsbury community. This year’s sponsors include: Smallwood Capital Management, World Jeep & Subaru, Jim Curley Buick, GMC, KIA, Gloria Nilson Realtors, Elegant Homes International, American Industrial Supply, T.D. Bank, N.A., Stack, Coolman, & Stack LLC, Sothebys, ING, AG&G (Ansell, Grimm, & Aaron), Shrewsbury Car Wash, and the Garley, Rieger, and Costa Families.
The One Mile Any Style began with children, and adults lining up in at the starting point. After a mad dash, the pack started to feather out and racers began to set their pace. For the next 20 minutes or so runners, joggers, skippers, and walkers traversed the modified one-mile course.
After the one-mile course was clear and reset a variety of skilled runners lined up for the start of the 5K challenge. Racers quickly took the neighborhood and began their morning run. For the next 45 minutes, competitors of all ages began to filter back to the finish line.
Upon completion of the two races, participants, family, and friends all gathered in the playground for refreshments. Following the races a brief awards ceremony was held to acknowledge the overall race winners from both races. Additionally, there were awards given out based on gender and age.
With the awards acknowledged, children made a final mad dash to the ball fields for additional activities while parents, supporters, and guests continued to socialize and enjoy the beautiful morning.
