West Long Branch: On Wednesday evening the Michel W. Thorne 4-Mile Race committee set aside a special moment to recognize those major sponsors who have been with the event every year since its first running 12 years ago.
One of the original sponsors, Buddy Damiano from the Damiano Funeral Home in Long Branch will be this year’s Official Starter at the race on Sunday, May 18, at 9 a.m. at Franklin Lake. Other 12-year major sponsors include Monmouth University, Spirit of '76 Wines & Liquors of Manasquan, New Jersey Natural Gas, West Long Branch First Aid, Branches Catering and Seashore Day Camp.
On race day, the Kids' Races goes off at 9:45 a.m. With awards and random prize drawings at 10:30 a.m. Registration can be made online at www.thornescholarshiprun.org or in person on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.
Paint the Town Pink, the women’s cancer cause is adopted as this year’s theme, “Stay tined Sunday to learn what the Pink means,” said coordinators Mindy Brady and Nancy Thorne Nancy Thorne.
The committee hopes to pass the 2013 record of 500 runners, and local trainer Rob Cavanaugh will be looking to break the course record.
The race is run in memory of Michael W. Thorne, a fireman who lost his lie while on duty 30 years ago. Scholarships in his name are presented each year.
