Turtles To Get Crossing Assistance In Long Branch

Why did the turtle cross the road in Long Branch? Because it can now do safely thanks to city officials and a local scout troop.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 148 came before the Long Branch Council on Sept. 26 to bring up an issue which has been occurring with some regularity on Van Court Avenue.

The two scouts explained that turtles have been crossing the road to reach Lake Takanassee. Earlier this month, some good samaritans and Long Branch Animal Control Officer Deb Nagel assisted a snapping turtle as it attempted to cross by blocking traffic and then loading the reptile into a garbage bin so it could climb up the curb.

The scouts asked if the city could install a turtle crossing sign in the area and lower the curb so that they could easily climb onto the grass. Long Branch Business Administrator Kevin Hayes said the city would look into lowering the curb but would definitely install the sign.
