Long Branch: For the second week in a row Greg Lowing took the Lake Takanassee Men’s 5K. The Women’s 5 K saw newcomer Kim Schwartz take the honors with her first Lake Tak win.
For the 5K Racewalk, John Fredericks continued his string of successes with a strong 5K performance that has kept him in the winner’s circle for most of the 9 week season. In the Women’s 5K Racewalk Melissa Endy put on an outstanding show as she stayed nearly step for step with Fredericks on their four loops around the lake.
SAC’s Walt McGowan introduced the Ocean Township High School Cross Country running team and the Jackson Township Girls Cross Country teams as lineup for the 5K Race was begun.
This week’s races followed last Monday’s “Alumni Day”, the Shore AC’s celebration of the 50-year of Lake Tak events. The party night saw close to 200 athletes and another 100 spectators - some retired from the games - gathered at the Lake Drive running site in Elberon.
The series has been a runner’s summertime magnet for SAC members. Some came from distant points. One runner from Oklahoma returned especially for the celebration.
Athlete ages ranged up to 80 years. “They brought fond memories, “said Tak creator and past Olympic racewalker Elliott Denman. There was a quick photo assembly for the self-named “Senior Squadron”.
Runner Harry Nolan was recognized for his 50 years of running the event. During those years Harry has won 131 of the 168 events he has run.
Two Monday’s remain on the season, August 12 and 19.
