West End Post Office Will Not Reopen

LONG BRANCH: The West End Post Office will not reopen at is current location.

United States Postal Service Spokesman Raymond Daiutolo said the renovations planned for the building, located at 131 Brighton Ave., would have more expensive than originally expected and that the plan is to find a new home for the post office.

Daiutolo said workers found "significantly more structural issues" in the building when they began examining the building. He said there were repairs planned for the floor of the building and other miscellaneous issues.

The original thought was that the post office would be relocated in 3-6 months, but since a new location is now being sought, the process could take about 10 months.

"We want to stay in the area, preferably in a retail front of a strip mall," Daiutolo said.

He said a public comment period must be held regardless of what location is found for the post office.

The West End Post Office was manned by a single employee and serviced 128 post office (PO) box customer. PO Box customers who use the facility can now pick up their mail at the main Long Branch Post Office located at 60 3rd Ave. until further notice. There are other post offices in the city located at 1175 Lincoln Place in Elberon and 567 Broadway.
