West Long Branch Will Schools To Hold Special Flag Day Celebration

WEST LONG BRANCH: The West Long Branch School District will be honoring Flag Day this year by lining the school's lawns with pride.

West Long Branch Schools Flag Day Celebration Co-Chair Jennifer Simmen said the school is selling flags to borough residents so they can be displayed at the school.

Along with this activity the district is having a flag ceremony for each school on Wednesday, June 14. The guest of honor who will be educating the students on the traditions and importance of the flag will be Michael Downes of Unbroken Warriors Foundation. Downes is currently walking from Washington DC to VFW Post 133 in East Brunswick.

"The Flag Day celebrations are only for the students but we would like the community to know how proud our schools are to fly the red, white and blue with a true American hero," Simmen said.

The VFW will also perform a traditional flag raising and folding of the flag. They will describe the meaning of the folds and how to handle a flag properly.

Simmen said those who are interested in purchasing flags can contact WLBfoundation@gmail.com attention Jennifer Simmen or Heidi Bahr.
