WLB Fire Company No. 2 Gets New Engine

District 53, WLB Fire Company No. 2 Christens Borough's New Pumper

West Long Branch:  Congratulations and the very best go out to District 53, WLB Fire Company No. 2 on its purchase of a new, much needed fire truck which they celebrated with a party on  June 3 - a wet down that was a long time coming, but worth the wait.  Both of the borough's two fire companies will use the new truck, but it will be housed at West Long Branch Fire Company No. 2.

The new pumper is a 2012 KME Custom Pumper. It replaces a truck that had a good life, more than 30 years in community service. It had outlived its abilities and its safe operation to the point where constant extra precautions went along with the ride to a fire. Maintenance costs were becoming prohibitive and availability was becoming a potential issue at times.

The fire department has been in need of a new pumper truck for many years. They are custom made and the price is hefty, $500,000 in this case.  The department was able to purchase it with the help of Monmouth University, Chief Charles Shirley said. He and Rich Cooper of Chemical Company No. 1 had reviewed the pressing need with the Borough Council months ago. With the Monmouth U commitment the department was able to move ahead.

The university is donating half, or $250,000 in total toward the purchase in yearly donations of $25,000 for the next ten years. University President Paul Gaffney was among the celebrants cheering the borough event.
