Construction of a new ShopRite is underway in Shrewsbury.
The Shrewsbury Planning Board OK'd the project nearly one year ago but the project was met with some legal challenges. That appears to have been resolved as construction fencing has been put up around the site, signaling that work is about to begin.
The supermarket will be located at 1151-1163 Shrewsbury Avenue in the Shrewsbury Business Center complex.
The developer, SCB Holdings, will demolish three "largely untenanted" vacant buildings in the in the Shrewsbury Business Center complex to make way for the 88,230 square-foot grocery store. The store will be a Saker Shop Rite and will be similar to the West Long Branch location on the corner of Monmouth Road and Route 36.
Home Goods, Marshalls, AC Moore and Saks OFF 5THcurrently occupy the shopping center.
The owners of the shopping center, National Realty & Development Corp. (NRDC), say that they are looking forward to seeing the project come to fruition.
"We are delighted to bring a tenant of Shoprite's quality to Shrewsbury Plaza. The support and feedback from the community to bring Shoprite to this project has been tremendous," said John G. Orrico, President at NRDC. "I'm certain that Richard Saker and his team at Saker Shoprite will deliver an extraordinary grocery experience to the community. We look forward to having them as part of Shrewsbury Plaza."
